Vian Sora
(b. 1976) is one of Iraq's leading young artists.
Not only is her work visually and technically exciting, it is
also important.
Sora is a leader among Iraqi artists in providing voice for her
countrymen in
dealing with the forces of war and
disconnection.
Sora was chosen by the Iraq Museum International to be the first
in a series of exhibits by modern artists that explores the
cultural tragedies
faced by Iraq since the fall of Baghdad in 2003.
The endeavor also marks the beginning of an initiative in
community
cultural development that is unique in the world of
archaeological studies.
Prior to the war, Sora spent endless days at the Iraqi National
Museum
in Baghdad and at archaeological sites throughout Iraq.
To Sora, the history and heritage of Mesopotamia are now
seemingly
forgotten by those in distant lands, and she seeks to
keep alive
the colors, shapes, shadows and symbols of a culture
that is critical for all humanity.
This exhibit, and
the series that follows, can be seen
